Life Piles - Letterpress Progress

I visited my friend Keegan at his print studio the other day to sit in on the printing of the first of my letterpress editions. I have never had prints made in this way before and it was really fun watching the progress. I am getting 3 letterpress prints made in total, 50 of each. The set will be called the Life Piles series. The orange blobs in the photos below are actually the plates for 2 of the drawings.. the third one is on the press getting inked..

I think i'll delay the launch of my new site by a couple days, while I wait to get all these. Then I'll launch when I have fun new prints to offer!

Open Studios!

I am organizing an open studios event at the North Coast Seed building in which my studio resides. It is slated for Sat. Oct. 24th. During the open studios event, I'll also be throwing an art show and party in my own studio. I'll be showing a new series of work as well as an installation and there will also be work by fellow artists Eatcho, Nick Olmstead, Keegan Onefoot and others. I think it will also serve as a Zenvironments website release party as my new website will be off the ground by then! Hopefully, there will be some performance and projections as well. More details to be announced..

Wind River Range

I spent the last week in Wyoming's Wind River Range doing some backpacking with my friend and partner in Tank Theory, Andrew Silverman. I flew from Portland to Salt Lake City where Andrew intercepted me on his trip across the country. We headed immediately into the beauty and solitude that is the Wind River Range.. to hike, to camp, and to spend some time away from civilization.. Man, it's trips like these that straighten out the crookedest of kinks..

I have been working on a new series of drawings that will end up as a print set.. this time as letterpress prints. They are going to be rad! I have never personally had my work printed in this way, so i'm excited for the results. Check out a sneak peak of the final layer of drawing on these.. Hopefully, these will be dropping in the next month, so stay tuned.

I recently created some new graphite work for the premiere release of Contains Caffeine Magazine, an Australian based world coffee drinkers magazine. The first issue, with my artwork on the inside and outside covers, will be released later this year.

I don't want to show the actual artwork before they actually hit newstands, so i created a layered illustration of the 4 pieces I created. Loving the jittery, nervous quality of the overlay..

Sorry for the lack of posts these days... been traveling this summer and have had little time to sit down and blog about any of it... especially the art side of things. I think It's time I actually post about the art I've been getting into..

That being said, I'll start with something that's already over.. Comicon! I was involved in a group show for Subtext Gallery that held it's debut during Comicon week last month. I was asked to create a piece based on.. you guessed it.. comic book characters! With very little time and a ton of ideas, I decided the Flash, a true friend from the past, would be my focus.

This was my first attempt.. the Flash deflated... uhh, kinda hated it.

Then I went off on this one.. the Flash unmasked.. totally in the opposite direction, but more where my mind is headed these days...

So it was this piece that I ended up shipping on out to Subtext for the "Meanwhile.. In the Halls of Justice" Show.

Every 4th of July, my friend Marion invites the homies to her parents' cabin in the Poconos of PA. I missed the last trip due to my west coast status, but this year I couldn't resist... so I plunked down the cash for a round trip ticket, braved the flight to NY, met up with my east coast comrades and headed into the woods for 4 days of recreation. What I met there was great friends, great food, great weed, great mushrooms, great trails, great fireworks, and great sleep.. A couple images if you will..

Strange Bedfellows

Meant to post this BEFORE the actual show, but last night saw the opening of the Strange Bedfellows Exhibition at Compound Gallery in Portland. The show was an international art collaboration between Japan and Portland.. One japanese artist and one portland based artist combined their work and styles on one wood panel. This exhibition is the result of those collaborations.. I have to say, they all came out awesome. As I have posted before, I collaborated with the Tokyo based artist Mahk.

La Maldad del Hombre

I created this piece about 2 years ago for a Tank Theory tshirt graphic. It's a spin off of indie Spanish cinema posters from the last decade.

Well it just so happens my mother teaches art class at the high school that i used to attend in NH. They are doing their final projects and their assignment was to reproduce a work from one of the masters or from an artist they admire. One of her students ended up choosing one of my works to reproduce! I guess I can chalk that up to being the son of the art teacher, but none the less, I am honored that she chose to reproduce one of mine.

Came out not so bad i think? Keep up the good work Shonna and keep with it!

One of the issues, 7.1 Spring 2009, features some editorial illustrations from yours truly.. They even hooked me up in the contributors page!

Color Magazine is dope.. A stylish, contemporary skate mag, but not lame like most of them. Get em' if ya can..

Mt. St. Helens

For the third time in my life, I visited nearby Mt. St. Helens in Washington state. This time was special for me in that most of the access roads and hiking trails were actually passable this time. Me, my brother Blake and his friend Gilby took an amazing hike out a ridge with a spectacular view head on of the blasted side. This baby erupted almost 30 years ago. It's amazing that something so beautiful came out of so much destruction. Chalk that up for the immense power of mother nature.

Michele Johnsen - Forest Lover Exhibition

My mom recently held an exhibition of her new work at the WREN Gallery in Bethlehem, NH - titled "Forest Lover". For those of you who don't know where my creative side came from, you can thank Michele Johnsen, my mom and mentor. Michele creates a lot of landscape oriented work, some traditional, some more ephemeral or dreamlike in quality. This latest exhibition showcases her more dreamlike landscapes based upon the rural northeast.

Alberta Art Hop

Public Ad Campaign - NYSAT Project!

Go Jordan and the NYSAT Project Team! A little late on posting this, as I was out of the country at the time.. Jordan Seiler, creator of Public Ad Campaign came up with a project to whitewash over 120 illegal billboards in New York City and have artists create original works in place of the illegal posted ads in all 120 locations around the city.. an amazing undertaking and an amazing project!

Public Ad Campaign

Just checked out Public Ad Campaign for the first time in a while. Looks like my man Jordan has been keeping tabs on New York! Jordan is an outdoor artist and activist against the violation of public space by big time media and advertising companies.. Jordan recontextualizes outdoor public advertisements with his own artwork and/or ideas.. shining a light on the infringement of billboards and the barrage of advertising into our daily lives. He also fights against illegal billboards in New York City, and on his blog generally comments on new technology in outdoor advertising and media. It is a great campaign and opens up the discussion over what is public space, who owns it, and who has access to it.

Otuya & Beyond..

Checked out a great show at Compound Gallery last thursday. It was called Otuya (the Japanese word roughly referring to something similar to a funeral wake here.. i think) featuring ImaOne, Tenga, and Shohei, all artists from Tokyo. I don't think this is common knowledge, but one of the artists, Shohei, is the son of Katsuhiro Ōtomo, the infamous creator of the even more infamous Japanese animated classic Akira. Imagine that much creativity and skill in one family! And the guy was just a normal, talented, cool and awesome guy.. whooda thought!

I had a chance to meet and hang out with all of them and they are really enthusiastic and talented people.. The opening was super fun, as was the rest of the night..

Somehow the Googly Eye crew struck while i was having a beer and a whiskey.. with my mouth open no less.

It was first thursday last week too, so I had a chance to check out a number of other openings going on that night.. In general, there was lots of great work! Portland stand up!

Then it was off to Someday lounge for a night of party time..

Then getting drunk and zoning out..

Then experiments with a Tazer..

Then my eventual ruin from too much booze and Tazerings.. All in all, I can't complain.. It was an awesome night.

Did some spot illustrations recently for the Vancouver Canada based Color Magazine.. a rad skate magazine that I've read for years, I was more than happy to lend a hand with anything they needed. The illustrations are for a story about some kids traveling and skating across Montana.. hence the splattered bugs and broken bottles.. look for it in the next issue. CMU Design Lecture - Video

Just got video of the lecture I did at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Design.. check out it and hear me speak! I talk about the history of Tank Theory, how it got started, my continued role as art director and the brand's relevance in the art, design and commercial world.. Because most of the lecture was dark, the guys editing the video decided to just show my slides with my voice over it... towards the last 10 minutes, you can actually see me answering some questions..

Talk at Carnegie Mellon University School of Design part 2

I just returned from my trip to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where I had a talk at the Carnegie Mellon School of Design. I thought I'd share some photos from my trip.

One of Dylan's design students created the poster for my part in the School of Design lecture series.. a little tank.. sweet.

After the talk, Dylan and some of his students took me to some famous sub/sandwich shop where we proceeded to eat insane heart attack inducing white bread filled with meat, sauerkraut, and french fries.. yummy..

Dylan, the one responsible for bringing me out there, gave me an extensive tour of Pittsburgh and it's history.. it was dope! A lot of cool architecture, lots of brick.. a real working class feel. And a ton of abandoned and boarded up buildings.. it was crazy.

He took me to this little town outside of Pittsburgh, called Braddock.. basically a shell of a former town. I guess in it's heyday 50 years ago, it had a population of 35,000 people. Today, it's around 3,500. There are entire blocks of totally abandoned and boarded up buildings.. banks and churches empty.. stores and business all closed and boarded. It was nuts..

There was a bunch of Swoon pieces all over the town. Apparently she travels to this remote little burnt out town to just hibernate and work on stuff for a couple months every year.

Dylan knows the Mayor of Braddock. He's a 30 year old guy who wears shorts and Nike Dunks. This is his car.

Apparently, the guy is actually trying to revive this area.. buying up a lot of old buildings and putting in a lot of work to convert a lot of these spots into art spaces. In fact, Dylan was telling me, the city of Braddock would give anyone willing an entire city block.. it's just crazy.. anyone want to go in with me??

Talk at Carnegie Mellon University School of Design

A fellow Mass Art alumni, photographer, and friend, Dylan Vitone, teaches at the renowned Carnegie Mellon University School of Design in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. He is also responsible for getting guest artist speakers to the university. Dylan has been asking me for the last 2 years to come and do a talk and finally we set a date to do the damn thing.. today!

I will be part of the ongoing Carnegie Mellon University School of Design Lecture Series. So as of 7pm thurs, feb 5th, I will officially and hereby be a lecturer. It's big league boys and girls! You can get more info at http://www.design.cmu.edu

My talk will focus on the work I have done for Tank Theory, the tshirt and apparel company I co-founded and to this day art direct for. But of course through Tank Theory I will be speaking about my own artwork and how it interweaves into the brand and filters through it.. plus the history of Tank Theory, the artists we work with, and the art community at large.

New Studio Space!

It's 2009 and I finally buckled down and got myself a bonafied studio space! I am moving into the 1920's North Coast Seed building in the Union Pacific train yard in the northeast part of Portland... right next to the Williamette River. It's a really industrial area that quite reminds me of New York.. a little piece of bustle and chaos amongst the often quiet of the pacific northwest.. And the actual studio space is huge.. 1400 sq. ft. 20ft wide, 70ft long with 14ft celings! And granted I don't even need all this space for myself, so I will be sharing it with a couple friends..

I don't move in until Feb 1st or so but the first order of business is getting rid of the standard tech/web neon green that is currently covering the walls!

Studio Visit - Eatcho

I took some time to visit my good friend and artist in arms, Eatcho, at his studio. He, Jason Graham and Robert Amadore are having a group show this upcoming thursday at the same gallery I just took my Acid in the Ice Cream show down from.. Backspace. The closing reception for my Acid in the Ice Cream show at Backspace Gallery took place on saturday, Jan 3rd and went smashingly. I want to thank DJs Tricera and Ill Slurl who provided kickin music well after the hours of the closing and Voodoo donuts who were kind enough to donate a slew of amazing donuts for the event. I'm pretty sure the donuts were more popular than the actual artwork at the show.. and thanks to everyone else who came out and showed support!

Backspace is pleased to announce Acid in the Ice Cream, the a solo show featuring the newest body of work by illustrator and artist, Zach Johnsen. Acid in the Ice Cream is a departure from Johnsen's customary imagery of critters, miscreants, and darting bodies. Instead, this show depicts more the human form and how it interacts with this world of ghosts and energies. Acid in the Ice Cream implies an act of violence or revulsion amongst something cute and cuddly. It is a sea of stuffed animals filled with cacti. It is a lollipop that tastes like tar and oil. It is a moment of pure revelation while drinking your morning coffee or tea. It is a sudden realization that everything we deal with on a day to day isn't all that there is.. that there is in fact, so much more around us if we open our senses to it.

This show will feature new works on paper plus new installations.
Also showing will be a variety of older works on paper as well as silkscreen prints, tees and more!

Complete Skate Deck Show

The Complete Skate event that I posted about earlier finally went down this last weekend. It was a skate deck art show and silent auction to benefit Complete Skate and its various youth programs here in Portland. The show was sick, with tons of great decks, good music, and beers a'flowin! Fright Night

Complete Skate

My friend Ryan runs Complete Skate, a non-profit youth outreach program in Portland to help get kids get out of trouble and into something productive.. and that something productive is skateboarding. On november 15th, Complete Skate is throwing a skate deck art show and benefit to help raise money for the various youth programs. He asked me to get down with a skatedeck and I was more than happy to oblige.

Anyone in the Portland area on november 15th should swing on through the Design within Reach building in the Pearl district and help out the cause.. more info to follow.

City of Roses show in Tokyo

My friend Matt over at Compound Gallery in Portland asked me for some work to be included in a show in Tokyo called City of Roses. It was a whirlwind show.. Compound Gallery invaded Tokyo and set up a mini gallery and Portland themed store in literally 6 hours. 250 people came out to the show and it was a huge success. Matt recently returned and shared these pictures. You can see more photos of the event here.

Guiness - Reach for Greatness

I had the opportunity to work on this commercial spot for a new Guinness campaign, Reach for Greatness. I worked with the NY based motion graphics studio Shilo who gave the pitch. They asked me to help them sketch out the elements for the commercial that would then be animated. I thought I'd post some rough images of my work for them and then the final product.

In the end the client was pumped, Shilo was psyched and I was juiced. It came out really well, so give it a looksie!

West Coast Roadtrip

I took advantage of the fact that my show at Thinkspace, the Sunnyside Yard, was in LA. Instead of boxing up and shipping all my work to Los Angeles, I decided to take the opportunity and road trip down with all the work packed in my subes. It was an amazing trip altogether, from Humbolt County to the Redwoods to Napa Valley to my time in LA and my trip all the way back up 101 back into Portland. The diversity of landscape, texture, temperature and weather.. it was amazing.. something I had never done before. I documented a lot of it.. here are some selects from the trip.

The Oregon Dunes
Very serendipitous.. my good friends from New York, Rebecca and Jen, flew into Portland just as I was leaving. They are on a coastal biking expedition from Portland, Oregon to San Fransisco! They are insane.. let's just put it like that. I met up with them on my way back up the 101 in a small town called Langolia.. They actually have a blog of their biking progress, amongst other things.. check it out.

It's great that some of my artwork and endeavors have reached back to where I was raised for many a year. The Sunnyside Yard Party

I am leaving for LA in a week for my latest show at Thinkspace, titled the Sunnyside Yard. Mostly, this is going to be an installation show in their project room. For the last couple weeks, I have been hustling on a whole new series of woodies, this time revolving around office politics meets hyper consciousness.. in other words, office workers gone birdie..

To mark the completion of my work on the installation part of the show, I wanted to throw a prescreening party to let all the folks here in Portland see what I have been up to before it all leaves for LA.

I had the pleasure of being invited to join a wicked collective called Artsprojekt recently. It is founded by none other than Andy Howell himself and promotes a type of on-demand art never before done on this scale and quality. You can order some of your favorite artists' work on skateboards, tees, giclee prints and more.

Andy is working with the likes of Shepard Fairey and Dalek and was kind enough to ask me to join in and also my brand Tank Theory! Currently, I am only offering my artwork on skatedecks, but fear not, the reproduction and quality are unrivaled. It's a giclee print on a skateboard for christ's sake! You could easily enough hang this on your wall as an art piece... some of you may.

I will be adding new products to Artsprojekt frequently, so do yourself the favor of checking this site out regularly.

I am having an exhibition of new installation works in the project room of Thinkspace gallery in Los Angeles on September 12th. I'm in the midst of creating new works for it now, so I thought I'd post some images of the new stuff I am working on.

Portland Pig Roast 2008

A very strange event indeed.. my friend Rob's family throws a bonafied pig roast every summer and I had the pleasure of attending this year.. Every year has a different theme, this being Star Wars.. yup, Star Wars will never EVER die. So not only was it strange for the fact that I just barely started eating meat again, and here I was eating pork from a fully ground roasted pig, but Darth Vader and the Storm Trooper commander were hanging out beside me. I was told that the pig was locally farm raised and had a healthy life, so I felt less guilty for eating it. I must say it was quite tasty.. and Rob's aunt & uncle who threw the party are rad people and did everything right..

The guy in the middle with the shades on is Rob.. he is working for Wieden+Kennedy at the moment.. for those who don't know, W&K is a huge design firm with it's headquarters here in Portland.
Check out the table cloth they had too! I had this same design on my sheets when I was a wee lad.
There was also a big silkscreen printing production happening in their garage. They were screening various Starwars/pigroast graphics on tees that people brought.. in some instances, they even screened right onto people.

There was just so much fun stuff to be had in their yard, including this section of tubing from an old McDonalds playset.. mixed with overexcited adults and this stuff becomes even more fun!

I'll just say that the weed around here is fantastic!

The summer is in full swing here in Portland. It seems when the sun finally comes out here, it opens the whole shebang wide open. Here are some tidbits from this last weekend..

I attended a crazy party in the southeast of Portland on friday night... of course we ended up on the roof. This picture here kinda sums up the energy of summer.

A number of bands played at the party with the culmination of this one orchestra that played serbian gypsy music. I have to say, I wasn't totally excited about seeing them, but after they played a couple songs i was blown away by how awesome they were. It was so different from what I normally listen too, but hey, that's why I moved out here to begin with.. to experience new shit. Here is a snippet of what transpired musically... it reminded me of old kitchens and traveling the countryside by wagontrain.

From there, I was off and running..

Portland Mural Show

This saturday, I'm going to be live painting at the closing of the Portland Mural Show. Anybody in the downtown or surrounding Portland area should come through and see 30+ artists all painting their own door donated by the Portland Re-Use Center. Plus, the closing of the Portland Mural Show. Aside from the art there will be bands, DJs, bbqing, and beer. Plus, it is supposed to be beautiful.. so come on through!

House Party

My brother, Blake, my roommate Alison, and myself threw a house warming party last saturday to break in our house. We had some old and some new friends come over and some we didn't even know. Alison's ex-boyfriend's band, The Fasttakers came and played and they were rockin! My friend from Boston, a one mr. Rob Heppler (formerly of the Weekly Drop) came thru.. He is better at blogging than me so you should check out his take on the night here. Also, an unexpected guest, my friend Syd from New York ended up being in town and she came thru too.. fun! As usual the party eventually dwindled to a core of drunk individuals doing stupid things.. and yes that group included me.

The Fasttakers played around 11pm and I'm sure completely pissed off the neighbors. Luck would have it that by the time the cops actually came to quiet us down, the band has already stopped playing.

Ryan & Pete.. Ryan is one of the owners of said house we were partying at. He didn't mind.
Of course Pete brought over his Trike and it injured people.. In fact Pete just told me the other day he got another Trike identical to this one.. we are psyched!

Alison makes this totally redneck punch made with cheap vodka pink lemonade and Pabst beer. The white-trashiness is only accentuated by the fact that we served it in a mop bucket.
Paris mysteriously made a late night appearance.

Alison's mannequins became the stage for many a stupid moments.

First Thursday

I went out on a mission by bike with some friends to downtown Portland for some art and stimulation.. It was first thursday last week, when pretty much all the galleries and artist studios open their doors to the public for a chance to see what has been happening.. strangely enough, it seems the navy was also in town that night. Not only did we see battle ships that I can't imagine how got in the city, but the coast guard was also out in full force, cruising up and down the Willamette River in heavily armed boats.. It was kind of scary actually, like marshal law had set in.. this of course was compounded by the fact that drunken sailors were everywhere..

To protect drunken sailors.. or the beginning of marshal law?

We checked out the thesis work of some artists enrolled at PNCA.. in particular, this miniature medieval set really stood out for me. It was amazing down to the last little morsel of food on the table.

While strolling through downtown Portland the other day, I spotted what looked like a stuffed dead body in a store window.. Upon closer inspection, I noticed it was some kind of quilted all-over form fitting blanket type thing.. Then I realized just what it was.. a wearable sleeping bag! I was like... "Yes! This is what everyone needs!".. went home, did some digging and found out they are called Selk'bags.... amazing. I'm getting one.

I'm really excited that after years of waiting, I've have finally gotten a number of awesome prints framed and hung in my new spot. Wanted to share some of my favorite artists work. Not the best photos, due to glare and such, but take a looksie...

Finally got about to framing the Tank Theory show poster I designed for the Spring 2007 season, titled Sideshow. As some of you may have seen previously seen photos of, I went out in the streets of New York on a wheat paste campaign putting these all over to generate buzz for the coming of that season. This rather cheap print on thin paper looks pretty damn good put in a solid black wood frame.

This letterpress print I got in trade years ago from Brooklyn based artist and designer, Kevin Devine.. I love this print and finally got the thing on my wall.

Another print by Grant Barnhart, this one newer that the other I had framed. This is one of the more expensive prints I've ever purchased, but just look at the thing! Such fresh artwork and printed so well.. the chicken in the center literally looks drawn on the paper.. This is one of my new favorites. Unfortunately, this photo does not do this print justice.

And a classic by Kozy and Dan.. I have always loved this piece and I'm psyched to finally get this framed.

I have so much more work I left back in New York.. much of it originals. I'm planning a trip back east in august, and I'll be scooping it all up then.. Can't wait to really fill up this house!

Road Trip

I took my first roadtrip since I've been out in Portland. My brother, his friend Gilbert, and myself hopped in the subes and headed towards Mt. Baker in Washington for a big Ski to Sea event that happens every year, and which my older brother, Josh,
has teams in every year. We left Portland and took a very long, scenic route to Mt. Baker taking us through Mt. St. Helens, Seattle, the North Cascades and a number of little towns in between, about every windy, one lane road that Washington had to offer (many of them washed out, snowed in, or closed altogether), awesome views, too many beers, one broken Subaru key, one long walk from Georgetown through South Seattle, lots of arduous hikes through snow or pavement, good campfires with good people, one 80-some mile marathon from Mt. Baker to Puget Sound, and some of the wrinkliest feet I've ever seen.

Art Session

I have been really inspired since coming to Portland, partly due to the creative atmosphere I dropped myself into.. and partly due to the excitement of moving and being in a new place.. Regardless, I have some very talented and motivated friends in Portland, and as soon as I got a couch to sit on, I invited some of them over for an impromptu art session.. My good friends Tai, Eatcho, and Asa amongst others were there to make some marks..

Later, I'll actually post some images of what came of that art session, besides eating burritos and smoking monster doobies...

Spring has done sprung here in Portland.. well, kinda... It's still a bit cold and rainy sometimes, but when the sun does come out, Portland turns into one big playground. It's full of some beautiful parks, tons of biking, ample skateparks, lots of bars and outdoor seating and everybody coming out of the woodwork to play. To mark spring, my friend Pete recently got this totally sweet trike bike made by Razor for $5! It didn't take long for us to destroy it's back wheels.. and my spine..

Tank Theory May 2008 Update

Tank Theory has kicked off May (umm.. a little late i guess) with some killer new stuff. Check out Stained Skull, May's Tshirt of the Month. It's full strength!
